Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about storage.to
What's the file size limit?
25GB per upload. You can upload a single 25GB file or multiple smaller files totaling 25GB.
How long are files kept?
Files expire after 3 days by default. You can extend this up to 7 days, or set a shorter expiry (1-7 days) when uploading.
Is there a speed limit?
No throttling. Upload and download as fast as your connection allows.
Can I share multiple files at once?
Yes. Collections group multiple files under a single shareable link.
- Up to 10,000 files per collection
- 25GB total size limit
- One link to share them all
Can I password protect my files?
Yes. Password protection is optional and available for both individual files and collections. You can set or remove a password anytime before the file expires.
Can I make a file self-destruct after it's downloaded?
Yes. Enable "burn after reading" on any file or collection. The file is automatically deleted after the first download—perfect for sensitive one-time shares.
Can I change when files expire?
Yes. Choose any expiry from 1-7 days when uploading. You can also extend or shorten the expiry after upload, as long as the file hasn't expired yet.
Are there any limits?
Just one:
- Uploads: 100GB per 24 hours (rolling window) to prevent abuse
- Downloads: No limit. Recipients can download as fast and as often as they want
Unlimited downloads is a key differentiator—your recipients never hit a wall.
How do I share on mobile?
Every file and collection has a QR code. On the download page, click the QR icon to expand it for easy scanning.
Is it encrypted?
Yes, with two layers:
- In transit: TLS 1.3 encryption on all connections
- At rest: AES-256 encryption via Cloudflare R2
Note: This is not end-to-end encryption. For sensitive files, encrypt before uploading.
Can you see my files?
We don't look at your files, but technically we have access to the storage. If you need true privacy, encrypt files before uploading using tools like gpg or age.
Where are files stored?
Files are stored on Cloudflare R2 and delivered via Cloudflare's global CDN with 300+ edge locations worldwide. This means fast downloads regardless of where you or your recipients are located.
Can I resume interrupted transfers?
Downloads: Yes. We support HTTP range requests, so downloads can be resumed if interrupted.
Uploads: Large files (50MB+) are automatically uploaded in chunks. If interrupted, partial uploads are cleaned up automatically.
Is there a desktop app?
Yes. A lightweight menu bar app for macOS and Windows with:
- Drag & drop uploads
- Screenshot capture and instant sharing
- Upload history
Is there a CLI tool?
